Jeffrey Simon ’07

Jeff Simon is a Marshall College mechanical engineering major who plans to pursue a Ph.D. in medical devices. He hopes to use his remarkable mechanical skills to heal and save lives. Jeff has earned 17 A+’s in this very competitive program during the last 7 quarters. His research has included sorting adult stem cells from whole blood and developing programs to extract information from samples for improving the impact resistance of a metal plate by coating it with a polymer. The gifted scholar says that the highlight of his college experience in terms of skills and lessons learned has not been in the classroom, but on the UCSD sailing team where he is co-captain and varsity skipper. Jeff will graduate in June.

Diana Hung ’07

Diana is a Revelle College biology major with minors in economics and psychology. She was one of eight students admitted into UC San Diego’s Medical Scholars Program established to recruit unusually gifted high school seniors considering a career in medicine. In addition to her outstanding academic record, she has found time to distinguish herself as a student leader, undergraduate researcher, mentor, and counselor. Her research has included the study of cell cycle time in frog retina cells, shortness of breath in cardiology patients and infant vision in babies born prematurely. Diana will graduate at the end of winter quarter and has been admitted to UC San Diego’s School of Medicine in the fall.
