Rob Knight is Professor of Pediatrics and Computer Science & Engineering and is Director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation at the University of California, San Diego. He authored “Follow Your Gut: The Enormous Impact of Tiny Microbes” and co-founded the Earth Microbiome Project and American Gut Project. His TED talk on the human microbiome has been viewed over 1 million times. His work combines microbiology, DNA sequencing, ecology and computer science to understand the vast numbers of microbes that inhabit our bodies and our planet.
Thad Kousser studies American state and national politics, government reform, direct democracy, interest group influence and how politicians use social media. He joined the Department of Political Sciences at UC San Diego in 2013. Kousser has authored, co-authored and/or edited six books, including the forthcoming The Logic of American Politics, 8th Edition and Politics in the American States, 10th Edition. His work has also been published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, the Revue Francaise de Science Politique, the Journal of Politics, Political Analysis, Legislative Studies Quarterly, State Politics and Policy Quarterly.
He is a recipient of the UC San Diego Academic Senate's Distinguished Teaching Award and the Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. Kousser serves as co-editor of the journal Legislative Studies Quarterly, and has worked as a staff assistant in the California, New Mexico and United States Senates.
A Professor of Political Science at the School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) and an adjunct professor in the Department of Political Science, Barbara Walter is an expert on international security, with an emphasis on civil wars. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Her current research is on the behavior of rebel groups in civil wars, including inter-rebel group fighting, alliances and the strategic use of propaganda and extremism.
Walter co-founded (with Erica Chenoweth) the blog Political Violence @ A Glance, winner of numerous blogging awards since its inception in 2012. She is also the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, including awards from the National Science Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, and Smith Richardson Foundation.
