Robin Ryan is the best-selling author of seven books including “What to
Do with the Rest of Your Life,” “Winning Resumes,” “Winning Cover
Letters” and “60 Seconds & You're Hired!” She is also the creator of
the Dream Maker, Interview Advantage and Salary Negotiation Strategies
audio training programs. Ryan has a successful career-counseling
practice providing individual career coaching, resume writing services,
interview preparation and salary negotiation consulting to clients
nationwide. A dynamic national speaker, Ryan frequently teaches
audiences how to improve their lives and obtain greater success. She has
been featured on “Oprah,” “Dr. Phil,” “NBC News,” CNN, the Wall Street
Journal and USA Today.

Reo Carr Editor-in-Chief, San Diego Business Journal
Reo Carr has over 20 years of journalism experience and also has an
extensive background in the book, magazine, and newspaper publishing
industries. He has been member of advisory board at Crossflo Systems,
Inc. since June 2006. Carr serves on the boards of the Sidney Kimmel
Cancer Center, and the advisory boards of the Family Literacy
Foundation, the Children's Initiative, and the San Diego Aerospace
UC San Diego alumni will share their career identities and journeys to building successful businesses. From a chief creative officer to a venture capitalist, the panel's range of experiences will provide valuable insights to take your personal startup to the next level, and inspire you to imagine more.
Afif Khoury is cofounder and managing member of Scatter Ventures, an early stage high-tech venture fund and incubator, as well as the founder and CEO of SOCI, Inc., a social media marketing platform. Khoury is a member of the board of directors of the San Diego Venture Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the venture capital ecosystem in San Diego. Prior to joining Scatter Ventures, he was a corporate and securities attorney, representing emerging growth technology companies as well as the investors that fund them. Khoury led the legal negotiations of more than one hundred venture financings and of dozens of acquisitions by companies like Google, Apple and Cisco, among others. He received his bachelor of science degree in neuroscience and physiology from UC San Diego prior to studying law and business at Northwestern School of Law and Kellogg School of Management in Chicago.

Drew Spaventa was part of the founding team of ecoATM, the first company to create an automated self-serve kiosk system to buy back old phones, tablets or MP3 players for cash. It uses patented, advanced machine vision, electronic diagnostics and artificial intelligence to evaluate electronics. Before joining ecoATM, Spaventa worked for Tyche Global Strategy, a San Diego-based hedge fund specializing in emerging market fixed income. He received his bachelor of arts degree in political science from UC San Diego and went on to earn his M.B.A. from the Rady School of Management. He is currently working on his juris doctorate from University of San Diego’s School of Law.

Gioia Messinger is founder and chief executive officer of LinkedObjects, Inc., a newly formed strategy and product development firm specializing in wireless Internet enabled devices. She was previously founder, chairman and CEO of Avaak, Inc., the leader in wire-free video networking products for the consumer market. And prior to Avaak, she founded SUMMIT Design Technologies, Inc., and was part of the team to develop the first wireless endoscopic capsule, or PillCam™. She is a visiting lecturer and mentor at the Rady School of Management at UCSD and serves on the board of directors of IQinVision and Fashioning Change. Messenger has seven patents, with seven more pending. She received her bachelor of science degree in electrical and computer engineering from UC San Diego.

Kalman Chodakiewitz is cofounder and chief creative officer of Cuttle.com, a Los Angeles based startup designed to create supportive and inviting communities by inspiring the sharing of resources between its members. Chodakiewitz cofounded Cuttle.com in 2010 as a platform for fellow artists to share musical collaborations. Since then, it has become an easy tool for students living in college dormitories and beyond to share resources like textbooks, guitars and bicycles with one another. Chodakiewitz received his bachelor sciences degree in cognitive science from UC San Diego.

Lisa Gordon is a dynamic, award-winning communications executive with more than 18 years of experience in government relations, community relations, public affairs, marketing, international relations, and public relations. As the City of San Diego’s first appointed small business ambassador, Gordon is primarily responsible for advocating internally and externally on behalf of small businesses through targeted outreach, communications, and special initiatives. Serving as the Mayor’s and the City’s liaison, Gordon helps people “connect the dots” on starting a business, growing a business, and identifying new programs to support the development of businesses throughout the region.
