Event Details

Get ready to rock out with UCSD Alumni at the 18th Annual Lytle Memorial Scholarship Concert. This year’s musical benefit features a campus homecoming with world renowned bass guitarist Nathan East, ’78 performing in UC San Diego’s award-winning Prebys Music Hall. Nathan East has played with rock music’s greatest artists for the past 35 years — from Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, to Madonna, Beyoncé and Daft Punk. At this special benefit concert, he’ll return to his San Diego roots to play with UC San Diego Music faculty and alumni, while raising funds for UCSD’s endowed Lytle Scholarship.

About Nathan East

Born one of eight children, Nathan East and his family moved to San Diego when he was four years old and set deep roots. A musician from his early years, East began playing bass guitar as a teen and appeared at local church groups and folk masses with his brothers, including regular performances at Christ The King Church in southeast San Diego. His breakthrough came while he was a member of a band named Power that was hired by Barry White for a national tour. Still a teenager, East became a member of the Love Unlimited Orchestra ("Love's Theme") playing Madison Square Garden, the Apollo Theater and other major venues. In 1978, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance from the University of California San Diego. He began work on a master’s degree when instructor Bertram Turetzky suggested that he already had enough education and that it was time for him to move to Los Angeles to try and start a lucrative music career. After decades playing alongside legends of rock and jazz, East is recording his first solo album — the first in a planned two-volume project — to celebrate his musical experiences and influences.
