Enriching Human Life and Society

UC San Diego Health Sciences is working on game-changing health research. We have long been known as a place where discoveries are made.

Today, we are known as a place where discoveries are delivered. Through “bench-to-bedside” research, we are transforming patient care through discovery and innovation leading to new drugs and technologies.

Alzheimer’s disease research
UC San Diego’s Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center was one of the five original Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers. The late UC San Diego professor, Leon Thal, MD, was the first to show that memory could be enhanced in Alzheimer’s disease patients by stopping the action of the brain chemical acetylcholinesterese (AChE). These findings led to the development of AChE inhibitors, some of the first drugs used to treat the disease. Learn More

Shiley EyeMobile for Children
Each year more than 100,000 American children needlessly go blind, simply because they did not receive an eye exam. It is our mission to give young low-income children the vision they need to succeed in school and in life by identifying, treating and preventing vision disorders through vision screening, outreach and education and early child development research. Investigating Autism in Children
Researchers at UC San Diego were the first to identify the neurobiological early-warning signs of autism during a child’s first year of life, a finding that offers the potential for earlier diagnosis, intervention and improved clinical outcomes for autistic children. Learn More

Student-Run Free Clinic Project
The UC San Diego Student-Run Free Clinic Project, in partnership with the community, provides accessible, quality healthcare for the underserved in a respectful environment in which students, health professionals, patients, and community members learn from one another. Often described as a “safety net for the safety net,” we serve more than 2,000 patients every year, while providing invaluable hands-on experience for students at UC San Diego’s School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy. Cancer Center Research
Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego is our region’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our unique "bench-to-bedside" approach to cancer research and patient care supports the broadest range of cancer activities in the San Diego region. From research in molecular genetics to the most advanced treatments, Moores Cancer Center is at the forefront of the fight against cancer, developing promising new therapies and making them available to cancer patients throughout the region.
