 In a new twist on the 1960s game “how many students can you squeeze into a Volkswagen bug,” more regular commuters to the
UC San Diego campus are sharing rides and taking alternative forms of transportation, so they can leave their cars at home.
A recent report from the campus Department of Transportation and Parking Services notes that in the past year, the single occupant vehicles (SOV) rate has dropped from 54 to 49 percent, which means that 51 percent of commuters to the campus now reach their destinations via carpool, vanpool, bus, shuttle, motorcycle, bicycle or as pedestrians.
“
I have never heard of a five percent change in behavior in a year, ” says Brian d’Autremont, director of Transportation and Parking Services. “This is a win-win situation for the region.”
