 Time
100 Most Influential
Craig Venter, Muir ’72, Ph.D. ’75, and Khaled Hosseini, M.D. ’93, were named among the 2008 TIME 100 Most Influential Scientists and Thinkers. Venter, the scientist who conceived the “shotgun” approach to DNA sequencing and won the UCSD Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award in 1999, made TIME’s list this year for building the first synthetic genome. Hosseini, the 2008 Outstanding Alumnus, was recognized by TIME for his two novels, Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, which have touched readers across the globe.
Not-to-Miss Homecomings
You are invited to take the field for Homecoming 2008 (October 17-19). The event kicks off with a beer garden for alumni athletes and commemorates the 20-year anniversary of UCSD’s 1988 NCAA Division III Champion Men’s Soccer and Women’s Volleyball and Tennis teams with a soccer doubleheader against Cal State LA!
AND IF YOU DO MISS THAT …
Mark your calendar for the Young Alumni Reunion starting with Spirit Night on February 20 and lasting thru the weekend.
For more information on both events and the June 2009 Alumni Awards For Excellence, go to: alumni.ucsd.edu/.
