The statistics boggle the mind. Fifty thousand patrons, players and volunteers on site daily. Nine miles of security fencing. Two thousand credentialed media representing 418 organizations. And 156 of the world’s best golfers.
The U.S. Open Championship is coming to Torrey Pines Golf Course June
9-15, and to mitigate the impact on the area, the annual San Diego County Fair postponed its opening day and UC San Diego changed its graduation dates. Plans call for patrons to park at Qualcomm Stadium, go through initial security, and then board some 200 shuttle buses for the round trip to the Gliderport off North Torrey Pines Road. There, the spectators will walk through 14 specially constructed admission gates, going through two additional security screenings. According to Vice Chancellor Steven Relyea, measures are also being instituted to ensure that campus parking lots are limited to faculty, staff and students.
And still more awesome statistics. The Open will offer 24,500 bleacher seats on a first-come, first-serve basis; as well as installing 400 telephone lines and 600 TV sets. They also expect 75,000 hot dogs to be consumed.
