Spotlights, music, Taiko drummers, a glowing bar and a global al fresco dinner kicked off of an evening to celebrate the 29th annual Alumni Awards for Excellence on Saturday, June 2, 2007, hosted by the UCSD Alumni Association. Fellow alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends were in attendance to honor individuals that have shown great leadership and dedication to the campus and community. Located at one of UCSD’s newest cutting edge facilities, CalIT2, the reception and ceremony celebrated seven honorees, all of whom were nominated for these awards by their peers and colleagues. This year’s awards recipients included:
In addition, the ceremony also recognized Outstanding Senior students and athletes from across the campus.
Every recipient displayed sincere appreciation as they made their acceptance speech, attributing their successes to influential professors, mentors, family and others that supported them while at UCSD and beyond.
The evening concluded with not only a delicious gelato dessert bar but a deep sense of pride that resonated with all guests, feeing honored to be connected to a university that produces such driven individuals like those that were celebrated that night.
Proceeds from the event benefited the Alumni Association Student Leadership Scholarship. Launched in 2004, the program is now halfway towards its $2 million goal for an endowment benefiting top academic undergraduates who have overcome significant financial hardship to serve as campus and community leaders. With these gifts, the student leaders of today will become strong alumni role models of the future.
