UCSD and Athletics
Mike Lewis wrote in the September issue of @UCSD that the UCSD community lacks
a sense of identity and he believes that intercollegiate athletics can help
rectify that. I couldn’t agree with him more.
However, many of the traditional campus events
are already focused around Athletics, such as the Triton Power
Hour, Spirit Night, and Triton Jam, and all these illustrate that
we have the ability to build a sense of community and tradition
without Division I competition.
Athletics is also reaching out to the community.
My position of Volunteer & Support Group Coordinator was created
to help foster relationships between the department, the community
and alumni. And in December, the University hired a development
officer, Diana Philippi, whose job is solely to concentrate on
raising funds for Athletics.
We are, however, faced with the challenge of
getting donors to come to campus and support our programs as well
as getting students and visitors to attend games when many in our
community are not necessarily aware of the first rate quality of
our athletes.
If these questions concern you, as they do Mike,
the best thing you can do is visit the campus and support our student
athletes. It is contributions from alumni that keep our department
running.
I hope to see you on campus soon and if you are not in the area check us out
online at athletics.ucsd.edu.
